Nominee Application Form: Part C Please write a professional profile of 500 words. Professional Summary Description: In 1998, towards the end of my active career as a full professor of computer science at the Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain - Belgium), I started wondering about the quality of teaching - and learning - in higher education, including in my own teaching. Together with a number of colleagues, we decided to tackle the subject as we would tackle any new scientific topic: by finding out what the state of the art was, by attending conferences, by reading and discussing the relevant literature, and by visiting institutions which had implemented new approaches to teaching and which had evaluated the usefulness, the efficacy, and the efficiency of these approaches.rnThe next step was to put what we had learned into practice: we designed and implemented a new curriculum for the School of Engineering, with a set of clearly stated learning outcomes and pedagogical methods, mostly problem- and project-based, which would allow our students to reach these outcomes. We had the results of the changeover analyzed by experts; the results they were able to put forward were encouraging enough to lead to the publication of a book.rnThis experience has led us to discover the importance of (1) professional development of lecturers w.r.t. pedagogy and quality in HE, (2) quality assessment of teaching and learning, and (3), more generally, the development of a culture of quality throughout institutions.rnA number among us, including myself, thought that, as academics, we could play a significant role in the professional development of other lecturers. With the support of UCLouvain, we created a spin-off company devoted to this aim (see http://www.FA2L.be). This company has provided training sessions to a growing number of HE institutions, mostly in France. Our most important contribution is making managers and lecturers aware of the possibility - indeed the urgent need - to think rationally about teaching and learning and to show how this can be done. This naturally leads to the notions of accountability, quality, quality assessment, quality assurance, etc. Several of these institutions then asked for consulting support in those areas, for instance to prepare for an external quality assessment of the institutions and/or of their programs.rnMy time is now almost entirely devoted to issues related to quality in HE. I am currently actively involved in the design of a new set of criteria and indicators for AEQES, the QAA for the French-language region of Belgium. I recently have been vetted as an expert for the assessment of QAA's by ENQA. Documents Submitted |
