Professional Summary Description: Dr. Julie Furst-Bowe was appointed the eighth Chancellor of Southern Illinois University in 2012. Southern Illinois University is a comprehensive master’s university with more than 14,000 students and 2,500 faculty and staff members housed on three campuses in the greater St Louis area. Before her appointment as Chancellor, she served from as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, the first and only university to receive the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. While at UW-Stout, Dr. Furst-Bowe led all continuous improvement efforts leading to the award. She also served as a faculty member, department chair and assessment coordinator during her tenure at UW-Stout. Julie is recognized nationally and internationally for her expertise in quality improvement in higher education and has authored several articles and edited two books on this topic, Quality and Performance Excellence in Higher Education and Advancing the STEM Agenda: Quality Improvement Supports STEM. For the past seven years, she has served as editor of the International Journal of Excellence in Education and has served as a quality improvement consultant for numerous colleges and universities across the United States. Over the past decade, she has shared her experience with educators in 16 countries throughout North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. She has made several visits to Asia and has been a speaker at conferences and a consultant at universities in China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. In 2011, she was selected to be a Fulbright Specialist working with a new university in Baku, Azerbaijan, through the Fulbright program, and she recently completed a five-year term as an external reviewer for the Ministry of Education in Singapore. She is a founding board member of the National Consortium for Continuous Improvement in Higher Education and serves as higher education chair for the American Society for Quality. She also serves on the advisory board for ASQ’s journal, Quality Approaches in Higher Education. Dr. Furst-Bowe has served as a peer reviewer and trainer for the Higher Learning Commission for more than a decade, and she is active in the American Association of State College and Universities, the American Association for Engineering Education and the International Association of University Presidents. A former senior Baldrige examiner, Julie was recently appointed to the National Board of Overseers for the Baldrige Awards Program. She has also served as a board member, speaker, examiner and judge for the state quality award programs in Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Dr. Furst-Bowe earned her Doctorate in Education from the University of Minnesota. Her dissertation received the Award of Excellence for Outstanding Research from the International Society for Performance Improvement. She has received numerous awards, including the Outstanding Achievement Award, from Wisconsin Women in Higher Education Leadership in 2011 and the Golden Quill Award from the American Society for Quality in 2013.
